My Story

My name is Joanna Beattie, I am studying at Stranmillis University. Throughout the week beginning 4th April, I will be participating in the Saphara Be The Change Programme. This is an amazing program filled with opportunities to bring pupils from all different communities together to learn and have fun.

However, we as a team recognise that not everyone has these same opportunities. It is estimated that there are 15 million girls worldwide who are not expected to enroll in education. Saphara targets girls within marginalised Dalit and tribal Indian communities. Many girls leave school between the ages of 12-16 to be in arranged marriages. However, with the help of Saphara, girls within these communities have moved on to be doctors, teachers, nurses, and much more!

Over the course of April, I will be walking 100 miles to represent the distance many girls travel in order to receive an education as well as symbolising the difference £100 will make to the life of girls within India.

With every £100 raised, education is provided for one of these girls. Every pound raised makes a difference. 31p of your pound directly supports Saphara's Indian schools, 27p supports teams going out to the school, 24p goes to the girls initiative, 11p supports teamwork in Northern Ireland and the final 7p is split between justice awareness and generating funding. Every penny counts! Thank you in advance.
